Child Protection: GPs call for child protection focus

Doctors have called for child protection to be included as a core part of their work for the first time. The Royal College of General Practitioners has concluded that child protection should be a core service provided by all GPs rather than an optional extra.

Child protection spokeswoman Ruth Bastable revealed that a child protection strategy would be presented before the college's executive committee shortly.

She said: "There is the expectation that every GP should at least deliver an initial response to a child protection concern."

It follows a recent motion passed by the British Medical Association that child protection is a core responsibility for all health professionals.

The college has also submitted a bid to the Department of Health to develop a programme for GPs with a special interest in child protection.
