Child Poverty: Campaigners slam policy on poverty

Campaigners are angered by the Government's failure to take up the suggestions of a select committee report on child poverty.

In a response document last week, the Department for Work and Pensions restated its intention to calculate poverty before looking at housing costs, which, some say, creates a false picture and has a knock-on effect on policy. It also declined to commit to a government-wide strategy.

Jonathan Stearn, director of End Child Poverty, was dismayed by the apparent rejection of a nationwide strategy. The Child Poverty Action Group and One Parent Families have written to MPs calling for poverty to be measured by family income.

Meanwhile, Welsh Assembly members have criticised the country's child poverty strategy, claiming it is lagging behind the rest of the UK.
