Change Management: Integration needs cash and expertise

More cash and expertise needs to be poured into managing the changeover to integrated children's services, a sector leader has warned.

Speaking at the Children Now conference last week, Rosemary Murphy, chief executive of the National Day Nurseries Association, called on the Government to adopt a businesslike approach to the rollout of children's centres.

"There seems to be no training or funding put aside for change management," she said, adding this was the best way to ensure all partners were included.

In particular, she called for free business and marketing advice for nurseries and other childcare services run by the private and voluntary sectors, which could become less viable if not supported through the change.

She urged councils to "audit what is already out there" before creating new childcare provision.
