Social work is undergoing an unprecedented recruitment drive to help address perennial problems such as low morale and high caseloads. Emily Rogers looks at what is happening to the profession.

Last year, 28-year-old Zoe Betts was throwing her energy into helping the rich and famous by arranging bespoke birthday parties for wives, speedy weddings in Vegas and other such high-class events.

Her job in lifestyle management was fun, glamorous and turned her into a highly efficient manager. "But I got to the point where I was quite stale," she says. "I was a bit under-challenged and not motivated any more. I thought the job might have been great for me in my early 20s. But I was getting a bit older and I wanted to own a career that I'm proud of."
