
Shelley Clarke finds her job immensely rewarding. “I do this job to help others, but I get a lot of satisfaction from it,” she says.
Clarke, previously a teaching assistant focusing on children with special needs, divides her working week across two Newham schools. She is available to around 900 children and their families, but will generally work with around 10 intensive cases at any time.
“My day always starts in the playground, where I can meet and greet parents, and make myself available if someone wants to chat,” she says.
“If children are arriving late I can deal with that, as there is often an underlying reason, perhaps problems at home.”
