Care leavers miss out on vital chances to prepare for employment, says charity Voice

1 min read Social Care Youth Work
The government should reserve apprenticeship places for care leavers and councils must increase efforts to secure their work experience, according to advocacy charity Voice.

Policy director Wendy Banks told CYP Now that care leavers are still missing out on vital chances to prepare for employment. "Young people in care do not get the work experience opportunities their peers get through family and friends," she explained. "Government should ensure that employment programmes, particularly apprenticeships, ringfence a number of places for children in care. Local authorities should also provide greater and more challenging work experience opportunities for this group."

Banks added: "Children in care feel they do not have the 'pushy parent' encouraging them. Instead, they feel the focus is on ensuring they receive the correct benefits or a job, rather than opportunities of further and higher education."
