Research highlights value of care leaver voice in service improvements

A programme involving eight councils highlights the value of engaging with young people to develop creative and innovative solutions for local challenges faced by care leavers, say researchers.

The three-year programme, led by Coram Voice, saw local authorities develop a range of service improvements together with care leavers in areas such as education and employment, emotional health and wellbeing, leaving care support services and accommodation. 

Service developments were initially based on feedback from care leavers through Coram Voice’s Your Life Beyond Care Survey.

Of those who took part a third of young people reported that they did not feel safe where they lived, a similar figure reported high levels of anxiety and one in five said they struggled to cope financially.  

North Tyneside, North Yorkshire, Oldham, Stockport, Coventry, Hertfordshire, Wandsworth, and Dorset councils took part in the programme.
