Calls for simplified tax credit system

Early Years
Childcare providers have called on the government to make financial support available to families from all social backgrounds.

Alternatives to the current tax credit system should be considered to cut down on bureaucracy, a charity added. At a conference held by 4Children last week, delegates also said sustainability should be a priority for the government in the childcare agenda.

Anne Longfield, chief executive of 4Children, said: "We believe a much simplified system of funding distribution would be more effective and greatly benefit both parents and childcare providers.

"We urge the government to consider other approaches, such as vouchers for parents or a system where funds are paid directly to the supplier on parents' behalf, rather than the current system where funds are paid to parents."
