Call for schools to spread wellbeing

Education Health
Teachers should integrate the development of social and emotional skills into all subject areas, according to guidance for the NHS.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) has called on commissioners and service providers to adopt a "whole school" approach to children's well-being within primary schools.

Promoting children's social and emotional wellbeing in primary education also suggests training teachers and practitioners on how to identify early signs of anxiety, emotional distress and behavioural problems among primary schoolchildren.

Joyce Rothschild, a member of Nice's public health interventions advisory committee and school improvement adviser at Solihull Council, said the recommendations would help to provide an "emotionally secure and safe environment, where children can be effective learners".

Ross Hendry, head of public policy at children's charity NCH, said: "In our experience, the emotional literacy of staff plays a key part in ensuring children are ready to learn and realise their potential."
