Call for more flexible, informal services

1 min read Early Years
Children's centres should provide flexible opening hours, "revolving door" services and targeted outreach work to improve outcomes for vulnerable children and families, an Action for Children report has urged.

The research, launched at the National Children and Adult Services conference in Liverpool yesterday (22 October), explored how the charity's children's centres in England, Scotland and Wales improved outcomes for children and families.

The most hard-to-reach families benefited most from being able to drop into centres for crisis support at any time and welcomed "revolving door" services that allowed them to access support programmes without having to be referred first.

Outreach work was also found to be a major factor in securing better outcomes for the most disadvantaged children and families. Outreach workers often engaged parents who would not normally access services and were able to offer informal support in community venues and in family homes.
