What is an outreach worker?
Children's centre outreach workers generally aim to raise awareness in the community about the range of services on offer at their local centres. They also target families who are most in need of the services offered but who might not necessarily use them. The types of families usually targeted include workless households, lone parents, young parents, parents and children with disabilities, and fathers.
A 2009 study by 4Children commissioned by the Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC) found that in practice there are almost as many definitions of the role of an outreach worker as there are local authorities and children's centres, leading to a "vast range of job descriptions and functions". Some children's centres say almost all of their staff are outreach workers.
