Bullying: Teachers condemn suggestion to give pupilsquestionnaires

1 min read
Teachers have baulked at a plan put forward by England's children's commissioner that would see them playing a more active role in the fight against bullying.

Al Aynsley-Green said this week that schools in England should becompelled to present every pupil with a regular questionnaire onbullying, adding that children and young people had suggested theidea.

The proposal has been backed by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, and theDepartment for Education and Skills is now considering whether to makeschools introduce the scheme. A spokesman for the department said: "Wewould be like to see more detail on the children's commissionerinteresting ideas."

But school leaders have urged the Government to reject the plan. MartinWard, deputy general secretary of the Secondary Heads Association, said:"I can't see this as being at all welcomed by our members who runschools. Schools already have all sorts of ways to address the problemof bullying. What we should be doing is learning from them how they dealwith the problem. We should be asking successful schools what works. Ibet you won't find many that give out a questionnaire three times ayear."
