The Maternity Alliance and the Daycare Trust have welcomed measures outlined in the Budget, including the creation of 1,700 children's centres in deprived areas, but in joint research released this week they said families are still missing out because of gaps in services and a lack of support.
Their report calls on the Government to redress the balance by extending statutory earnings-related maternity pay for an extra month, with a long-term goal to increase it to one year.
Current legislation allows six months of earnings-related pay, comprising six weeks paid at 90 per cent of average earnings and 20 weeks at 100 per week.
