Briefing: Crib sheet - Maternity services

2 mins read
Easy access to high-quality pregnancy and post-natal care are called for in the national service framework's final standard.

Staff collection for a new baby. And another little Kylie enters the world?

I think they're calling him Edgar. Mmm. I've just been reading the final national service framework standard on maternity services, which calls for women to have "easy access to supportive, high-quality maternity services, designed around their individual needs and those of their babies".

Meaning what? The provision of individualised services, with an emphasis on the needs of vulnerable and disadvantaged women; midwifery and obstetric care based on providing good clinical and psychological outcomes; and helping new parents prepare for parenthood. Power to the parents, in fact.

Or a new dictionary of names. I like Edgar. It's odd that the standard feels it has to remind people that, for most women, pregnancy and childbirth are normal events. But the quality of service provided can have a lifelong impact, and there's a real need to ensure that some groups of women, teenage parents for example, are aware of what's available and able to access the services they require, as well as maintain contact with health practitioners.
