The National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services sets out protocols for treating ill children.

Isn't that the whole point of the health service - to treat illness?

As well as promote wellness - remember the new emphasis on public health. But Standard 6 of the National Service Framework is indeed about managing illness, and it states: "All children and young people who are ill, thought to be ill, or injured will have timely access to appropriate advice and to effective services that address their needs throughout the period of their illness."

That's ambitious. And it should be achievable. For example, the vision statement refers to treating a child or young person as close to home as possible, in a local system that co-ordinates all the relevant services that can help care for that child.
