Briefing: Crib Sheet - Children's mental health

2 mins read
The National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services includes plans to extend mental health services.

Healthy mind, healthy body. Or healthy body, healthy mind - which comes first? Take a look at Standard Nine of the national service framework, which is about the mental health and psychological wellbeing of children and young people.

What's it trying to achieve then? An improvement in the mental health of all children and young people. The standard itself states that: "All children and young people, from birth to their 18th birthday, who have mental health problems and disorders have access to timely, integrated, high-quality, multi-disciplinary mental health services to ensure effective assessment, treatment and support, for them and their families."

How? A combination of training staff who work with children and young people to promote positive mental health, the provision of flexible and accessible services, rapid response to an urgent problem, robust protocols between agencies, age-appropriate care for those admitted to hospital, and continuity of care following discharge or the transition from child to adult services.
