The chancellor devoted a long section of his speech to Labour's pledgeto abolish child poverty - something which his supporters often accusethe prime minister of not highlighting enough.
He said: "Every time child tax credits lift a child out of poverty,every time a child who would have been denied opportunities under theTories enjoys early learning with Sure Start ... let us celebrate thisas a victory not just for these young people but a victory for ourLabour values." He also repeated pledges to put 3 million children ontothe Sure Start scheme by 2010 and to abolish child poverty in ageneration. And he highlighted the importance of early intervention andthe role of the lead professional.
