The Scottish Executive last week published a report examining theeffectiveness of secure accommodation for young people in Scotland. Thereport, Secure Accommodation in Scotland, looks at how secureaccommodation for juveniles compares to "open" alternatives such asresidential or community-based services. It also proposes a framework tohelp social workers decide on when to use secure accommodation.
The research tracked 53 young people in secure accommodation over twoyears and compared them to 23 teenagers with alternativearrangements.
Those detained and the professionals working with them wereinterviewed.
Although the study set out to compare the success of various approaches, the researchers found that the different approaches were oftencomplementary rather than distinct alternatives.
