The Youth Justice Board is consulting on its youth crime prevention efforts, which is an attempt to cut custody numbers.

There seems to be a lot of talk lately about identifying futurecriminals early. The way it's been reported you might think we're beingasked to measure the distance between a child's eyes. However, the YouthJustice Board, or YJB as it now prefers to be known, has issued aninteresting consultation paper looking at developing a youth crimeprevention strategy.

Don't they already do some of that work? Yes, through youth inclusionprogrammes, youth inclusion and support panels, and parentingprogrammes.

There's plenty of research to show that targeted prevention can beeffective in reducing anti-social behaviour, criminal behaviour andre-offending, as well as improving the life chances of children andtheir neighbours' quality of life.
