Briefing: Crib sheet - Tackling overcrowding

2 mins read
The Government is considering the adoption of a new standard to find out how many families live in overcrowded homes.

When is a house overcrowded? When two teenage boys are arguing withtheir father over who controls the remote.

But you can leave the room. What about real overcrowding? There are twodifferent measures set out in the Housing Act 1995. If a male and femaleover the age of 12 who are not living together as husband and wife haveto sleep in a single room, that breaches the room standard forovercrowding.

The space standard specifies the size that the room used for sleepingshould be; for instance, a room for two should be at least 10.2 squaremetres - though for that measure, children under 10 count as only half aperson and babies don't count at all.
