Cafcass has been reviewing how it can improve and develop its services for children and has released a consultation on these ideas.

I haven't seen much mention of Cafcass in the news lately. That may be agood sign. For the first three or so years of its existence (it was setup in April 2001), the news was pretty negative and verydemoralising.

Remind me of its history. The Children and Family Court Advisory andSupport Service was created in order to bring together the work of theFamily Court Advisory Service (involved in the main in disagreementsover custody and contact), the guardian ad litem service (they representchildren's voices and interests in public law cases) and the Children'sDivision of the Official Solicitor. Unfortunately, what seemed asensible idea came unstuck when the merger was rushed and bungled,followed by very unhappy guardians ad litem, poor management, a fewpublic scandals and a lot of bad publicity.
