BIG INTERVIEW: Schools extend their reach - Joan Barnes, head teacher, Hackney Free and Parochial School, London

Hackney Free was the setting for the launch of the Living for Sport initiative last week. This project uses sport as a means of re-engaging young people with school through physical activity (YPN, 17-23 September, p5).

A Church of England comprehensive, Hackney Free was one of the pilots for the BSkyB-backed project, which is being extended to 17 schools in England initially, and eventually to around 70. Speaking to YPN at the launch, minister for sport Richard Caborn said the purpose of the scheme was to see sports activity as "a gateway to intervention". "If you intervene with young people to prevent exclusion at an early age, it can be much more effective than if you try to get to them afterwards," he said.
