Big interview: Juliet Lyon, director, Prison Reform Trust - A system ripe for overhaul

Juliet Lyon, director of the Prison Reform Trust, wants to see a different approach to custody for all prisoners, but believes the problems for young offenders are particularly acute.

"I feel very strongly that, for young people in particular, if there is a way of avoiding prison, we should do our utmost to find it," she says. "Once they are in that system they are an ex-prisoner when they come out.

"Prison is a whole different world. It has been the most neglected public service, it is the one people know least about, and it is not a suitable environment for vulnerable young people."
