"I just walked into the middle of them, and said: 'You can tell me to 'f' off because I'm a mad cow, but you're going to listen to me first,' and they all just stood and looked at me," she recalls. "And I thought, 'Oh no, what have I done?'."

Fox, who was last week named Drug Worker of the Year for the East Midlands by the Home Office, was tired of seeing negative headlines about young people hanging around, and wanted to know what they would rather be doing.

The answer turned out to be that they would like an informal place to hang out, drink coffee and play pool.
