Big Brother pods enter care homes

Social Care
Children's residential homes in Rotherham are hoping to set up Big Brother-style diary rooms to get young people to talk about their positive experiences.

The "praise pods" have been used in two schools in Rotherham to promote good behaviour by allowing children to record their achievements in the classroom on a video (CYP Now, 26 September-2 October 2007).

Richard Crook, child mental health specialist for support, therapy, education and prevention at Rotherham Primary Care Trust, came up with the idea and is in talks with the residential homes about how they can use the scheme.

"They are going to use the praise pod to make a video diary of these children's best bits in care, so if they are going to a foster placement or another residential care home they have got a record of their positive achievements," he said.

On Monday (21 January) a consortium of six primary schools in Rotherham also started to use the praise pods.
