I used to work for an airline supporting the ground crew but was made redundant after the 11 September attacks.
It was a tough time. I was out of work for more than two years and my self-esteem plummeted. But then I was placed on the New Deal scheme and given a work placement at the YMCA shop in Goodge Street, central London.
Not only did I learn retail skills, but the staff also helped me become a far more confident person. Now I have lots of friends and was recently made manager of my own YMCA shop in Notting Hill, west London.
