I work as a volunteer lieutenant for the Boys' Brigade and oversee about 20 five- to 15-year-olds. My responsibilities include organising programmes and making sure the environment is safe for them. For the younger groups, it is mostly arts and crafts, songs and games. For the older ones, it is mostly badge work, which includes games, spirituality and the whole spectrum of youth work.
It's important because we make sure young people have a safe environment to have fun in and provide society with better citizens. We had one boy who was painfully shy when he first came to us, but later he came out of his shell. It feels good to know I helped.
