
Life can be tough for the families of the 5,000 troops from the Catterick Garrison Army base in North Yorkshire, who are deployed in Afghanistan at any one time.
Mothers and sometimes fathers are left bringing up children on their own for six months at a time, often far from their own family. Their children live each day in fear that their absent parent will be injured or killed.
Following an unannounced inspection in January, Ofsted inspectors praised the strong links social workers at North Yorkshire County Council had built with the Army Welfare Service to ensure the area's high number of army families are supported effectively during stressful times.
