Wirral Council -- Inspection of safeguarding and looked-after children services, March 2011.

Social workers' strong links with local nurses and doctors in the Wirral have impressed Ofsted, which inspected the council's safeguarding and children's care services in March.

Joint training was an area that stood out in particular, with inspectors finding that where possible, social workers were trained alongside health professionals.

This included regular child protection training involving dentists and GPs.

Councillor Sheila Clarke, cabinet member for children's services and lifelong learning, says: "By sitting alongside each other they can better understand each other's day-to-day work, their pressures and most importantly the jargon they use, which can seem impenetrable to others.

"Another benefit is that dentists and GPs are in regular contact with children who may not be on our radar. They are our eyes and ears. It is important that they have a good knowledge of child protection to help us spot problems at an earlier stage."
