Behind the Inspection Rating: Success for SEN one-stop-shop

Stepping Stones, Wiltshire - Early years inspection - October 2015

Nearly 20 years ago, when Debbie Wickham first entered Stepping Stones, she was a worried parent whose two-year-old had been referred to the charity's specialist centre for children with special educational needs (SEN).

"I was very upset about it because I thought people were looking for things that were wrong with him, so I was a reluctant parent who was won over by the team," she recalls. "My son does have severe learning difficulties but is now a delightful young man and I know that is because he had such a good start."

Wickham was so impressed by the Trowbridge centre, which is based in Longfield Children's Centre, that she started working there, and became its manager. Now Ofsted has recognised the quality of Stepping Stones' work by awarding it an "outstanding" rating.
