Oakwood House Nursery, Huddersfield - Early years inspection - May
2013.
One day, a giant came to visit Oakwood House Nursery. The children arrived in the morning and, as usual, headed out into the spacious grounds of its Grade II-listed building and there, right by the mud kitchen, was the evidence: a huge wicker boot. Excited, the children, who had been reading books about giants in the nursery, rushed to the staff. "Look," they cried. "The giant visited in the night and he has left his boot."
Soon the children were writing letters to the giant, who wrote back to the children, fuelling their excitement even further. There was no giant of course, but the way the wicker boot captured the children's imagination and led to them practising their reading and writing was all part of the outstanding-rated Oakwood House's strong belief in learning through outdoor play.
