Behind the inspection rating: Fostering agency puts quality first

FosterCare UK, independent fostering agency inspection, published August 2013

Danni Starley is crystal clear about what makes FosterCare UK different from other fostering agencies: a refusal to play the numbers game.

Just one in 20 of those who apply to become foster carers with the agency will make the grade. That, she says, is no accident. "I know that our competitors have much higher figures, but we are looking for something very particular in our applicants," she says. "We're looking for people who have particular skills, maybe from other occupations. So we've got foster carers who are police officers or ex-residential care workers or teachers or childminders. These are people who come with a very relevant work base already. That helps because it means the foster carers we are approving are people who are capable of handling the challenges of the young people we work with."
