That was on a Tuesday morning. By Wednesday, things had changed a bit. The new headline was "'No-one beyond help' - Barnardo's". A revised opening described the Barnardo's campaign to change people's attitudes towards troubled young people.

Why the sudden switch? Perhaps the campaign just started to work.

Young people aged between 16 and 24 would prefer to give up sex for a month than do without their mobile phone. IT news web site The Register quoted a survey of young people's attitudes to mobiles, carried out by Carphone Warehouse.

The Register acted surprised. But a mere glance at the full report leaves no doubt how much young people value their mobiles. Some 70 per cent say their mobile phone has made their life better. Young people feel safer when out and about. They say their parents give them more freedom.
