The finance company reckons that the minimum wage of 3.30 payable to 16- and 17-year-olds is exceeded because of market forces. The average hourly wage for a teenage babysitter is now 4.74. Supermarket work clocks in at 4.50 an hour. And even fast-food restaurant work yields an average 3.60 an hour for under-18s.

Spare a thought, though, for those doing paper rounds. They pull in an average 1.10 an hour. Government crackdown sorely needed.

Teenagers are admirable. The Daily Telegraph is pleased to report a major discovery. It was sent the glad tidings in a survey by the Scouts. It told its readers that "teenagers care deeply about the environment and their local community and would rather spend a quiet night at home with their parents than loiter on corners swigging lager".
