"Believe in children." So Barnardo's instructs us in its new advertisingcampaign. I was sceptical at first; surely it's stating the obvious. Wewouldn't be working with children if we didn't believe in them, wouldwe?
What the charity is really saying is: "Don't give up on children, especially when they're older and kicking off. They're children withproblems." It reminds me of a girl who's been a group member for yearsand is the mouthiest and most volatile of all our children.
Sometimes she drives me up the wall. Full of attitude, she'll comebursting into the group, disrupting it with her behaviour. She verballyabuses staff members and other children and is in possession of a sneerthat can wither the hardiest adult. I often feel like calling it a daywith her - it would be so much easier.
