Back Page: Social Claire - Brown stands up for the boys

1 min read
Claire questions the attitudes behind the gender gap in education.

I was interested to read recently that Gordon Brown has promised actionto tackle the gender gap in school achievement. This is to prevent boysfalling further behind girls educationally than they already are.

The chancellor has warned that changes are needed urgently if we are notto create a "wasted generation of boys", and suggested that lessons needto be more geared to individual needs rather than that of the wholeclass.

Well whaddaya know. My past experience in education has revealed thatboys and young men in the classroom are often treated as a problem, withlittle real thought given to solutions that take their needs intoaccount.

As the saying goes: boys will be boys. We can't help but pigeonholethem, make crass stereotypes and then blame them when they don't do wellwithout asking why, or what would make their education better.
