I've been a youth and community worker for a long time now and over the years I've watched the nature of the profession change. During that time, we have become far more "professional" and while this is a positive step, it has taken away a lot of what was good about youth work and replaced it with something that is a lot more clinical and risk-averse.
Sometimes it feels like our clients are statistics and are not treated like young people. I often wonder if we are helping to foster our country's growing culture of dependency on social support and the benefits system. We need both of these to exist but I think there is a case for looking at the nature of the help that is given and finding ways of reducing this.
