I don't know why I was surprised to read that 90 per cent of 12-year-olds in the UK now have a mobile phone. Just about every conversation I have with a young person seems to be interrupted by a burst of the Black Eyed Peas or Justin Timberlake coming from their coat pocket.

Even so, it still made me stop and think. The Mobile Life Youth Report, commissioned by The Carphone Warehouse, quizzed 1,250 people aged 11 to 17. Not only did it reveal that the vast majority of young people owned a mobile, it also showed that they use them a lot more than many adults do. According to the survey, children and young people are sending or receiving an average of up to 10 text messages a day - three times more than their parents.
