Apparently there were cheeseburgers on offer at the last meeting of our youth council. I can't be sure because I didn't actually get to see them.

But I did spot a chocolate chip muffin, evidence that something remarkable is happening over here in Southend. Our civic centre catering service is starting to adapt to the needs of young people.

You see, each time our youth council meets we provide them with some food and drink for the break. Well we don't, we pay the council's catering service to do that for us.

But this isn't just food - this is "council food". And while it's not all that bad, it is very traditional and adult-oriented. Which means just about everything has salad in or around it, or is unidentifiable to your average 14-year-old. Either way, it means they will usually give it a miss. Unsurprisingly, a lot of the food was getting left and young people were going hungry.
