- Five young people from Somerset have won the dubious honour of choosing Britain's smelliest cheese. The carefully selected pupils from Wells Cathedral School will form the judging panel at the Smelliest Cheese Championships to be staged at the Royal Bath & West Show later this month.

"Unlike the world championships, which invested in highly technical measurements of smell, the Royal Bath & West version will use an equally reliable set of measurements - children aged seven to 11, who have the most powerful and sensitive sense of smell," reported the news website This is Gloucestershire. "The finalists will face the children's panel and judges will take into account reactions such as 'Yuck, that one really mings'."

"A council is spending £5,000 a year on a scheme to teach schoolchildren to catch a bus," reported The Daily Telegraph, somewhat sniffily. Classes train 10- and 11-year-olds to buy tickets and read a timetable, and involve a visit from the "Cool Bus". They also teach pupils how to behave and the cost of vandalism.
