Perhaps the bureau is now getting its own back. It carried out spotchecks on organisations that submit applications to clear people to workwith children. It found that more than a third were failing to confirmapplicants' identities accurately.
Many bodies have been "shamelessly sloppy", thundered The Times. "Thereis little point in a bureau that does not check the right people againstcriminal records."
Registered bodies are also pretty dreadful at filling the forms in. Anestimated 464,000 applications have been returned by the bureau becauseof errors and omissions.
Earlier this summer, the bureau issued a press release titled: "Customerconfidence in the Criminal Records Bureau's vetting service at anall-time high". Sometimes, the only way is up.
