- A teachers' union has reissued advice to members to have nothing to do with children. Not outside school, anyway.

Don't take school trips, says Eamonn O'Kane, general secretary of the NASUWT: "In an increasingly litigious society which no longer appears to accept the concept of a genuine accident, our first responsibility must be to protect our members."

The union has a series of recommended don'ts. Members are told not to give children a lift in their own vehicles. Nor should they place themselves in a "one-to-one situation" with a child. Driving a minibus on an educational visit is also ill-advised.

There is much anxiety about children's activity levels. We know they are restricted by traffic dangers as well as the disappearance of playgrounds and safe areas to meet. It seems harsh that adults motivated by self-protection should add more barriers to kids' chances of getting out.
