The Prime Minister and his deputy both took time out from running the country to give their views on what teenagers should be allowed to wear in public. The Bluewater shopping centre's ban on hoodies was serious media business. But not everyone could keep a straight face all the time.

The Today programme ran an interview with a habitual hood wearer who admitted hanging around dark places and being "frightening". But that turned out to be Dom Anthony Sutch, a Benedictine monk. After a few common sense pleasantries he advised getting rid of the image of fear of hoodie wearers. "If you talk to them, most are charming young men," he said.

The Times interviewed two pensioners shopping at Bluewater who were entirely dismissive of the baseball cap ban. They favoured the hoodie ban, but on other people's behalf. One said: "We only mind them having hooded tops.

They can be threatening. Not to us, mind - if one of them came up to me, I'd whack them with my handbag."
