It's January. A lot of parents are seriously strapped for cash. What are their options? For an estimated 1.3 million, borrowing from the children is one way of making ends meet.

That was the result of a survey by Yorkshire Bank. It also reckons thataround 300,000 parents will consider raising cash by taking some oftheir children's toys back to the shop.

The media generally treated it as a half-jokey news snippet. Fewwondered what chance the children had of seeing their money again. Asfor seriously reporting the reality of poverty or the precariousness offamilies' finances ... not this time.

Or does the sugar rot their teeth? Tricky. Thank goodness for impartialscientific research.

Much of the funding for medical research comes from companies sellingstuff under investigation. This prompted researchers, part funded by theChildren's Hospital in Boston, USA, to examine whether that leads tobias.
