The sound of the new cartoon film, Shark Tale, was found to be regularly in the high 70 to low 80 decibel range, according to a team of US paediatricians.
Their sound meters registered a peak during a climactic fish fight scene of 85.8 decibels. Some of the trailers and ads before the film also breached the 85 decibel safety level.
Angela King, an audiologist with RNID, the charity representing deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK, told the paper that each time the ear was assaulted by loud noise, cells were damaged or destroyed, eventually leading to a loss of hearing. "Parents should complain until cinema operators take notice," she said.
