- Comparisons are odious. So let's make some. For its Christmas appeal, the Independent on Sunday and the Children's Society joined forces to raise money for child refugees.

With the customary thanks for readers' generosity, the paper last week announced that the sum raised was - more than £20,000.

Wow! It's true that the IoS doesn't have many readers: its official circulation figure during December was 171, 000 - an average donation per reader of just under 12 pence. A bit like a classroom of 30 kids raising £3.50 for their chosen charity.

By comparison, the Daily Telegraph reported donations for its appeal of £470,000. That's nearly 53 pence per person, and equivalent to our class donation of £15.90. It also included a single donation of £10,000 - half that raised by IoS readers.
