Back Page: And this is what I do - Jennifer Campbell, African andCaribbean Evangelical Alliance

1 min read
What is your job all about? In my role as youth work development co-ordinator, I am organising our Serve Them Right conference on 25 September, which will discuss the problems facing youth workers in churches. This involves arranging the publicity and sponsorship details as well as the speakers. I am also co-ordinating a new course we are developing with Oxford Brookes University called Youthwork and Ministry, which will start on 30 September. I will be organising bite-sized conferences to disseminate information to youth workers three times a year.

Do you have a youth work background? Yes, I was a teenage volunteer in church play schemes for five years. I then got involved as a youth worker and got paid work as an arts team worker, co-ordinating arts projects. I have a big interest in youth arts and, in my previous job, I managed a voluntary organisation working with young offenders using the arts.

Do you link up with other professionals, agencies or organisations in your work? The African and Caribbean Evangelical Alliance is the voice for Black majority churches and I meet Christian organisations that share our passion and vision for youth work.

What qualifications, skills or experience do you need in your job? You need to have experience of young people. You also need good administrative skills and to be able to talk to people.

What's the biggest thrill or the most rewarding aspects of the job? It is when youth workers come away from a conference feeling like they have gained something that they can apply to their job or learned something relevant to them.

What's the biggest headache? Trying to fit everything into a three-day week.
