Autism: Wirral council to pay compensation

1 min read
A council could have to pay 10,000 compensation to a woman with a severely autistic son after it was criticised for failing to provide effective care services.

Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council was found guilty of "maladministration causing injustice" by Local Government Ombudsman Patricia Thomas, following an investigation of a complaint by "Mrs Penny" (not her real name for legal reasons).

Her son, now 17 years old, has severe autism with communication and learning difficulties, and can occasionally become hyperactive and aggressive. His mother complained that the council failed to assess the needs of her and her family, particularly her son.

Wirral council's director of social services, Kevin Miller, said: "This is a very difficult and complex case. We have tried to work with 'Mrs Penny' over the period of her complaint, and the ombudsman accepts that the officers working with her have tried to do so in a sensitive manner."
