Autism: Carers in line to get blue badge parking

Carers of autistic children may get access to free parking alongside people with physical disabilities next year after a five-year delay in Government action.

Holders of the blue badge are exempt from paying for parking meters, payand display bays and from some limits on parking times, but the badgesare not available to families with autistic children.

Speaking in the House of Lords last week, Lib Dem Lord Clement-Jonesquestioned why the Government has taken so long to follow uprecommendations to change the scheme by an advisory committee in2002.

In response, Government whip Lord Bassam said it was necessary to "morefully reflect" on the issue. He confirmed a strategic review of thescheme will report in September and that a decision will be made by2008.

Ian Wylie, chief executive for autism charity TreeHouse, said:"Politicians recognised five years ago families of someone with autismface enormous barriers doing things other families take for granted suchas going shopping or a family outing."
