Last week the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act became law. Itincludes an measure that means the Government can abolish Section 9 ofthe 2004 Asylum and Immigration Act without further legislation.
Section 9 is the controversial power that makes it legal to stop thebenefits of failed asylum seekers who refuse to leave the UK. It canleave families destitute and has led to some going into hiding to stoptheir children being taken into care.
Lisa Nandy, policy advisor at The Children's Society, urged theGovernment to scrap Section 9 immediately. "There are still familiesdestitute, awaiting the results of the Government's review of thepolicy," she said.
